3 simple tips to nail a job interview!
You searched, you applied, and now you have an interview. Congratulations! Now what? It’s time to nail the interview. Here are three simple reminders to help you.
- Show up on time…This sounds simple, right? Actually you should plan to arrive at the interview 20-30 minutes before your scheduled interview time. This gives you some buffer time in case there is an accident, or unpredictable weather that we sometimes have in the Adirondacks. Arrive at your destination and take a few minutes in your car to review the job description and think about why you are right for the job. Take some deep breaths, and give yourself plenty of time to walk in 10 minutes early….calm, cool and collected. Here are some breathing tips to help calm anxiety.
- Mentally prepare yourself….The person who is interviewing you could be sweet as pie or a drill sergeant. The fact is, you never know who you are going to get. Prepare yourself to answer the tough questions. If you have a gap in your work history or were unexpectedly discharged, practice explaining what happened and how you have grown from the experience. Employers want honest, sincere answers. For more tips on how to explain gaps in employment check out this article from indeed.com.
- Don’t let your guard down….The interview is going great. No awkward pauses here! It’s great to have a rapport with your interviewer. It helps them see how you behave as a co-worker. Don’t forget to keep it professional, keep the conversation light and positive. Gossip, negative talk, or off-color jokes can be red flags and could cost you a job offer.
